How was the beginning of Islam?
The beginning of Islam can be traced back to 610 A.D. when the prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) got his first revelation, as he saw the angel Jibril.
The call to Islam began when the prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) was 40 years old. One day he was at Mount Hira the angel Jibril appeared Infront of him. The prophet was so frightened and didn’t understand who is that, and where he come from. The angel asked him to read a scroll that he held but the prophet told him that he didn’t learn how to read. Jibril asked him to read again and the prophet’s answer was the same. Then the angel Jibril said the following verse:
“Read in the name of the Lord Who created; created man from a thing that clings. Read, for your Lord is the Most Generous, and He has taught by the Pen; taught man what he knew not…”
These were the first verses from the Holy Quran that were revealed to the prophet. when Jibril disappeared the prophet ran to his home frightened by what just happened. His wife Khadija comforted him and he told her about what happened. And she believed him which makes her the first one to enter Islam.
When he told his tribe the tribe of Quraish about the revelation of Islam and that he was a prophet they didn’t believe him and treated him badly. They refused to believe that there is only one God and that the Idols they worship can do them no good or bad. Refused to believe that women are not objects but are equal to them.
Islam was revealed to fix all the bad in the world and to guide humans. But as always, it’s a human’s trait to follow their desires and what brings them money.
The Message of Islam was clear, there is only one God to worship. The Holy Quran shows that all humans are equal. Now one is better than the other and slavery is wrong and should be ended. However, this was not pleasant to their ears, therefore they refused to believe the prophet. and they chose to treat him badly, even though, he was under the protection of his uncle Abu Talib.
The people of Quraish used threats and then hurt the prophet and his followers physically, but it was all in no vain. The prophet didn’t answer to them and he continued spreading Islam. that when they decided to boycott the prophet and his followers. They stopped the Muslims from trading and transaction. Which leads to starving them and weakening them. But the prophet and his followers didn’t give up. No matter what they did to him he had faith in Allah, he knew that Allah will protect him and help him along the way.
The beginning of Islam was very hard and the prophet lost two of his loved ones, his wife Khadija and his uncle Abu Talib. And the people of Quraish didn’t stop, their violence increased and it was worse than before. Because the prophet lost his protection and there was no one else to stand up for him. That was when he ordered his followers to migrate to Abyssinia.
The Migration in Islam
Islam spread with time and reached Yathrib and people from Madinah came to meet the prophet and they made a contract with him. Soon after when life in Mecca was unbearable for Muslims, they migrated to Madinah. this migration is what is known as Hijra. The Hijra was in 622 C.E. The people of Madinah were too kind and they helped the Muslims and even shared their homes and food with them.
This made the people of Quraish terrified of what will happen in the future. Therefore, they gathered their army and faced the prophet and his Army in the battle of Badr. The Muslim army was of 313 men and faced a huge and completely prepared army. Even though they were outnumbered they had faith in Allah and his prophet and they won the battle.
When the number of Muslims grew, they were able to return to Mecca in the year 630 to become the center of Islam. Then Islam grew and reached many people and places in the middle east.
After the prophet’s death started the period known as the Rashidun Caliphate, where the Islam empire ruled the middle east. With time the Islam religion spread beyond the middle east through conquests to reach big cities like Baghdad, Jerusalem, and Alexandria. Also, the North and Western parts of Africa were conquered taking control over much of the Byzantine and Persian territory.
The third Caliph Uthman created a version of the Quran to keep the words of Allah spreading for many generations so that people can read the Quran at any time without having to memorize it. Also, many mosques were built for people to worship Allah.
What was Islam first called?
Since the first revelation of the holy Quran Islam was known as Islam, but it didn’t have any other name.
