What is the virtue of reading Quran in Ramadan?
The prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said, “When the month of Ramadan starts, the gates of the heaven are opened and the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained.” (Bukhari).
Ramadan is a gift from Allah to all Muslims, and we should take advantage of it, try to come closer to Allah, give zakat, and Sadaqat, read Quran, pray night prayer, and do any good acts. One of the greatest things that bring us many rewards is reading Quran in Ramadan.
Now let’s learn more about the virtue of reading Quran in Ramadan, why Ramadan is so important to Muslims, and more.
What is the benefit of reading Quran in Ramadan?
“This is the Book (Quran)! There is no doubt about it—a guide for those mindful ˹of Allah˺” [Quran, 2:2]
Here are some of the virtues of Reading the Quran in Ramadan:
1. Many rewards for the reciter of the Quran.
The prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said, “Verily the one who recites the Quran beautifully, smoothly, and precisely, he will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels. And as for the one who recites with difficulty, stammering or stumbling through its verses, then he will have twice that reward.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari)
From this hadith, we can see clearly the benefits of reading the Quran, don’t worry if you stumble and stutter when reading it you will get twice the rewards for trying your best even though it’s hard for you.
Because all Muslims know that reading Quran grants many rewards to the reader you will notice that most of them seek to finish the whole Quran at least once. Quran changes once life as it guides us in the right way and teaches us how to deal with any problem we face, and no matter how hard life gets we know that Allah will help us.
You should try to learn Quran reading and tajweed Quran to read it correctly.
Al-Tirmidhi and Abu Dawood narrated from Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Amr, that the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said:
“It will be said to the companion of the Qur’an: Recite and rise in status, recite as you used to recite in the world, for your status will be at the last verse that you recite.”
Reading Quran doesn’t just benefit us in our life but also in the afterlife, so we should learn Quran, understand it, and always read it.
2. Quran will intercede for a person on the Day of Resurrection
The prophet (peace and blessing be upon) said:
“Fasting and the Qur’an will intercede for a person on the Day of Resurrection. Fasting will say, ‘O Lord, I deprived him of food and desires during the day, so let me intercede for him.’ The Qur’an will say, ‘O Lord I deprived him of his sleep at night, so let me intercede for him.’ Then they will both intercede for him.” [Narrated by Ahmad, al-Tabaraani, and al-Haakim]
It was also narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon) said:
“Read the Quran, for verily it will come on the Day of Standing as an intercessor for its companions.” (Muslim)
On the day of judgment, the holy Quran will intercede for the one who read it daily. We should take advantage of the month of Ramadan and make Quran reading part of our daily life, not just something we do in Ramadan. When reading Quan you will feel peace, calmness, comfort, and all your worries will go away.
3. Softens the heart.
When reading the Quran, the person’s heart becomes softer, and all the depression and anxiety will go away. The person will humble himself as he knows that Allah sees him.
The Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) once said to ibn Mas’ud, “Recite to me some Quran”
He replied, “O Messenger of Allah! How can I recite it to you whilst it was revealed to you?”
He said, “I love to hear it from other than me.”
He said, “So I started to read from Surat An-Nisa until I reached the ayah that reads, ‘So how will it be when We bring from every nation a witness, and we bring you, O Muḥammad, against these people as a witness?’”
The Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him), at this point, said to Ibn Masʿūd, “This is enough”. Ibn Masʿūd said, “I looked at him and he was shedding tears.” [Bukhari & Muslim]
4. Your status will be raised.
It was narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said, “The best of you are the ones who learn the Quran and teach it to others” (Bukhari)
We can understand from the above hadith that reading Quran and becoming closer to it gives us higher rank in the afterlife.
Al-Tirmidhi and Abu Dawood narrated from Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Amr, the prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said: “It will be said to the companion of the Qur’an: Read and elevate (through the levels of the Paradise) and beautify your voice as you used to do when you were in the Dunya! For verily, your position in Paradise will be at the last verse you recite!” (Abu Dawood)
5. A guide to its reciter.
Allah revealed the holy Quran to guide us to the right path, showing us what is forbidden and what is allowed. There are many lessons and stories in the Quran to learn from. Quran teaches us to always have faith in Allah and believe that he will get us out of the hardships we are going through. All we have to do is to remember that Allah is here for us and that he’s the only one to turn to for help and guidance.
What are the virtues about Ramadan?
The month of Ramadan has many benefits and virtues, the greatest thing about it is that Quran was revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) during it.
“The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey – then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you, and perhaps you will be grateful.” [Surah Baqarah Ayah 185]
Lailat-ul-Qadr is a night that carries many blessings and is better than a thousand months. It’s a night that all Muslims spend reciting Quran, praying, making Dua, and asking Allah for forgiveness.
Allah says in the holy Quran:
“Indeed, We sent the Qur’an down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.” [Surah Al Qadr]
Allah also says in the Quran:
“We sent it down on a Blessed Night: We have ever been sending warnings.” [44:3]
Fasting and reciting Quran in Ramadan is of great importance that the holy prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said,
“Whoever fasted the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith and hoping for reward, then all his past sins will be forgiven, and whoever stood for the prayer on Laylat al-Qadr out of sincere faith and hoping for reward, then all his previous sins will be forgiven.” [Agreed Upon]
The prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) also said, “Whoever prayed at night during it (Ramadan) out of sincere faith and hoping for reward, then all his previous sins will be forgiven.” [Agreed Upon]
Ramadan was given to us to seek forgiveness and try to be better versions of ourselves. Fasting and reading Quran softens the heat and humbles it.
