What is the day of Ashura?
The day of Asura is one of the most important days to Muslims, but why is that? There are many reasons and one of them is that Allah forgives the sins of the previous year of the person who fasts that day.
Additionally, Muslims fast because it is a sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessing be upon him). The prophet instructed us to fast on the 10th of Muharram to continue the tradition of the prophet Musa (peace be upon him).
We know that there are so many questions going on in your head, and we will answer them all in this article, so, let’s get started to know What is the day of Ashura?
What is the Day of Ashura?
The Day of Asura is one of the most important days to all Muslims due to its rewards and virtues. But what is Asura? Asura is the 10th day of Muharram. The word Asura comes from the Arabic word “Asharah”, which means “ten” and it is called Asura because it is the tenth day of the Arabic month of Muharram.
What is the reward of fasting Ashura?
When fasting on the day of Aurah Allah forgives the sins of the previous year, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Fasting the day of ‘Arafah I hope Allah will expiate thereby for the year before it and the year after it, and fasting the day of ‘Ashura I hope Allah will expiate thereby for the year that came before it.” [Muslim, 1162.]
Can you imagine that fasting one day can expiate all your past year’s sins? What more can we ask for? Besides its reward, we fast Asura because it is a sunnah, and the prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) made sure that he fasted on it every year.
Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I never saw the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) so keen to make sure he fasted any day and preferring it over another except this day, the day of ‘Ashura, and this month (meaning Ramadaan).” [al-Bukhaari, 1867.]
Does fasting on the day of Ausra erase all our sins?
Now you might be asking, what are the sins that are expiated by fasting Ashura? Does it erase all our past year sins? And the answer is that it only erases the minor sins. But when it comes to major sins, they need repentance.
Al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Fasting the day of ‘Arafaah expiates for all minor sins, in other words, this brings forgiveness for all sins except for major sins.
Then he said: Fasting the day of ‘Arafaah is an expiation for two years, and the day of ‘Ashoora is an expiation for one year, and if a person’s Ameen coincides with the Ameen of the angels, his previous sins will be forgiven… Each of the things mentioned may bring expiation. If he does something that expiates for minor sins he will be expiated, and if there are no minor or major sins, it will be recorded for him as good deeds and he will rise in status thereby… If there is one or more major sins and no minor sins, we hope that it will reduce his major sins.” [Al-Majmoo’ Sharh al-Muhadhdhab, part 6.]
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “The expiation of purification, prayer, and fasting Ramadaan, ‘Arafah, and ‘Ashura applies to minor sins only.” [Al-Fataawa al-Kubra, part 5.]
How is Ashura important?
Fasting the day of Asura is important because it erases the past year’s sins, and it is a sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Why do Muslims fast for Ashura?
Why do Muslims fast for Ashura? Muslims fast on the day of Asura because it is a sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The prophet made sure he fasted Asura every year and intended to fast on the 9th of Muharram too. It is a way of continuing the tradition of prophet Musa (peace be upon him) as he fasted on the day of Asura to thank Allah for saving him and his people from the Pharaoh.
Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to Madinah, and he found the Jews fasting on the Day of Ashura. They were asked about that and they said: This is the day on which Allah granted victory to Moosa and the Children of Israel over Pharaoh. We fast on this day out of respect for it. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “We are closer to Moosa than you,” and he enjoined fasting on that day.” [Narrated by al-Bukhaari (3943) and Muslim (1130).]
Abd-Allah ibn ‘Abbaas narrated: “When the prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) fasted on the Day of Ashura and told the people to fast, they said, “O Messenger of Allah, this is a day that is venerated by the Jews and Christians.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Next year if Allah wills, we will fast on the ninth day.” But by the time the following year came, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had passed away. “[Narrated by Muslim, 1916.]
We fast on the day of Asura because it is the day that Allah saved the prophet Musa and his people from the Pharaoh and his Army. Prophet Musa and his people were surrounded by the sea from one direction and the Pharaoh and his army from the other, Allah ordered prophet Musa to strike the ground with his staff, and when he did saw the sea split into two. Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) and his people escaped and when the Pharaoh and his army tried to follow them the sea closed drowning him and his army.
Therefore prophet Musa (peace be upon him) decided to fast that day and made it a tradition as a gratitude to Allah. So, the prophet Muhammad instructed all Muslims to fast on the 10th of Muharram and made it obligatory until Allah instructed Muslims to fast the Month of Ramadan and it became a sunnah.
Abu’l-‘Abbas al-Qurtubi said: “It may be said that Allah, may He be exalted, gave him permission to fast on this day. When he came to Madinah, he found the Jews fasting on this day, and he asked them what made them fast on this day. And they answered in the manner mentioned by Ibn ‘Abbas, that it was a significant day, on which Allah saved Moosa and his people, and drowned Pharaoh and his people. So Moosa fasted on this day as an act of gratitude.
The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “We are more deserving of being closer to Moosa than you.” So, at that time he fasted on this day in Madinah and instructed the Muslims to do likewise. In other words, he enjoined fasting on this day and emphasized the importance of doing so. The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) adhered to that, as did his Companions, until fasting the month of Ramadan was enjoined, and the obligation to fast on the Day of Ashura was abrogated. At that time, he said: “Allah has not prescribed for you to fast this day.” Then it was made optional to fast on this day or not, but it remains an act of virtue, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “But I will fast on this day,” as is mentioned in the hadith of Mu‘aawiyah.
Based on that, the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) did not fast on the Day of Ashura in imitation of the Jews, because he used to fast on this day before he came to them, and before he knew about them. Rather what happened when he came to Madinah was that he enjoined it and adhered to it by way of seeking to soften the Jews’ hearts and win them over, as was also the reason for facing their qiblah. This was the time at which the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) liked to be in harmony with the People of the Book in matters concerning which there was no prohibition on doing so.” [al-Mufhim lima ashkala min Talkhees Kitaab Muslim (3/192).]
Did prophet Musa fast Asura?
Yes, prophet Musa used to fast on the day of Asura out of gratitude for Allah, as proved in the following hadith:
Prophet Musa (peace be upon him) used to fast the Day of Ashura to thank Allah for saving him and his people from the Pharaoh and his Army. On that day prophet Musa and his people were escaping from the Pharaoh and his army but they were surrounded by the Red Sea from one direction and the Pharaoh and his army from the other direction, they had no escape. At that time Allah ordered prophet Musa to strike the ground with his staff and when he did the sea split into two giving prophet Musa and his followers an escape. When the Pharaoh and his army followed the prophet, the sea closed on them, drowning them.
What happened on the Day of Ashura?
The day of Asura is the day on which Allah saved the prophet Musa (peace be upon him) and his people from Pharaoh and his army. It was the day when Allah ordered the prophet Musa (peace be upon him) to strike the sea with his staff and when he did the sea split into two so that he and his people could escape. When the Pharaoh and his army tried to follow them, the sea closed, drowning him and his army.
Therefore, the prophet Musa (peace be upon him) decided to fast on Asura to thank Allah and as a form of gratitude, he made it a tradition. When the prophet (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) found out that the Jews were fasting Asura to celebrate that day he ordered the Muslims to do the same.
How do Muslims celebrate the day of Asura?
On the day of Aura Muslims celebrate by fasting and giving charity, as our beloved prophet instructed us. We were also instructed to fast on the 9th day of Muharram.
Prophet Muhammed (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, ‘’One who generously spends on his family on the Day of Ashura, Allah (SWT) will be generous to him for the entire year” (Baihaqi)
In another hadith, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: to encourage Muslims to fast on the day of Asura and give charity: “Whoever fasts Ashura it is as if he fasted the entire year. And whoever gives charity this day it is like the charity of an entire year.”
How do Egyptians celebrate Ashura? In Egypt, there is a tradition of cooking what is called Ashura pudding to celebrate that day.
Is fasting on Ashura mandatory?
No fasting Asura is not mandatory. However, you should know that fasting was mandatory in the past before Muslims were instructed to fast the Month of Ramadan. But after fasting Ramadan became mandatory fasting the 10th day of Muharram became a sunnah.
It was narrated that: “Prophet Muhammed (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered [the Muslims] to fast on the Day of Ashura, and when fasting in the month of Ramadan was prescribed, it became optional for one to fast on that day [Ashura] or not.” (Sahih Bukhari)
Is It Recommended to Fast on the 9th and 10th of Muharram?
Yes, our beloved prophet instructed us to fast on the 9th and 10th of Muharram to be different from the Jews and Christians.
“ [Narrated by Muslim, 1916.]
Therefore the scholars recommended that we fast on the 9th and 10th of Muharram as our beloved prophet intended to do.
Why should we fast the 9th of ‘Ashura with the 10th?
If you are wondering, what is the wisdom of fasting the 9th of ‘Ashura with the 10th? The answer is concluded in the following hadith:
Al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “The scholars among our companions and others said that there are several reasons for recommending fasting on the ninth day (Tasoo’a’):
1 – The intention behind it is to be different from the Jews who limit their fasting to the tenth day. This was narrated by Ibn ‘Abbaas.
2 – The intention was to join the fast of ‘Ashura to another day, just as it is not allowed to fast on a Friday on its own [but it is allowed if one fasts the day before or the day after as well].
3 – The idea is to be on the safe side and make sure one is fasting on the tenth, in case the moon sighting was not accurate and what people think is the ninth is actually the tenth.
The strongest of these reasons is in order to be different from the People of the Book. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade resembling the People of the Book in many hadeeths. For example, he said concerning ‘Ashura: “If I live until next year, I will certainly fast the ninth.” [Al-Fataawa al-Kubra, part 6.]
Ibn Hajar (may Allaah have mercy on him) commented on the hadeeth “If I live until next year, I will certainly fast the ninth” and said:
“His concern to fast the ninth may be understood as meaning that he would not limit himself to that, rather that he would add it to the tenth, either to be on the safe side or to be different from the Jews and Christians, which is more likely to be correct; this is what may be understood from some of the reports narrated by Muslim.” [From Fath al-Baari, 4/245.]
Hadith about the fasting day of Ashura.
The Prophet said, “Fasting the Day of Ashura (is of great merits), I hope that Allah will accept it as an expiation for (the sins committed in) the previous year.” (Muslim)
Abu Hurairah narrated: “I asked the Prophet: ‘Which Prayer is the best after the obligatory Prayers?’ He said: ‘Prayer during the middle of the night.’ I asked: ‘Which fasting is the best after that of Ramadan?’ He said, ‘The month of Allah that you call Muharram’.”
Ibn Abbas also narrated: “I never saw the Prophet keener to fast on any day other than the day of Ashura and any month than the month of Ramadan.”
